We had a cement path put through our garden with an aggregate finish. I was reading the runoff is toxic to fish but is it toxic to my garden? What about air conditioners? It is no longer there but the water dripped on part of my garden. Is that ok?
Oh, and it is a veggie garden so I am concerned about eating the food. Thanks

May 23rd, 2010Air conditioner question…. accumulator?
May 20th, 2010Is the Accumulator in a car’s air conditioning system just another name for the Dryer?
I couldn’t find out information on the web about a car’s AC system. My mechanic said I need to replace the A/C compressor and the Accumulator. Im trying to find cheaper parts online to give to him.
Need to fix air conditioner. Help?
May 19th, 2010My air conditioner is a Carrier and it suddenly stopped putting out cold air. The fan part will work if i push on it but it is still not cold. Any advice??? Thanks
Is it safe to turn on the air conditioner?
May 16th, 2010We have a window AC unit but I don’t know if its safe to turn on right now. This morning my mom was trying to kill a hornet with bee spray and a significant amount of the spray dripped into the top vent part of the unit. Should I wait until the spray has definitely dried or is it safe by now. It’s been six hours.
Thanks!

Can a seized air-conditioner compressor by bypassed on a 97 Plymouth Breeze?
May 14th, 2010Today my 97 Plymouth Breeze started smoking. The smoke was coming from the air-conditioner compressor (or the belt). The car was brought to a main-stream auto repair shop, where I was told I would need a new compressor and various other parts totaling 00 + tax. I asked if the A/C could just be bypassed and was told it could not.
After speaking with various other people and auto-parts stores, I discovered that not only was it possible to bypass the A/C, but there is actually a part called a ‘bypass pulley.’ I was also told that by simply turning the A/C off, the belt would be free to move.
I guess my question is really how to bypass the A/C and would turning the A/C off fix the problem on a seized compressor (vs. just a compressor that simply wasn’t working, but not seized).
To anyone who previously answered and has come back:
This afternoon I had the option of towing the car to a different location (Thanks to AAA). Of course. Anything to get it out of the mainstream mechanics’ shop.
A few people around town had told me I could simply turn the A/C off and the clutch would disengage and allow the belt to free-wheel. We figured that since the tow truck was on the way, we might as well test that. So we turn the A/C off and fired her up. After about 10 minutes, everything seemed to be running fine. , so I drove the car home. When I arrived, the I lifted the hood and smelled no burning and everything was still running fine.
Granted, this was not the smartest option, and I will still try to have it looked it through less money-hungry eyes. If anyone has any input like "Don’t do that again!" then feel free to post. It may have just been luck.,
Thanks.
Payne vs. Carrier air conditioner?
May 11th, 2010Our central air/heat pump needs replacing. The repair tech states that Carrier makes Payne (and Bryant) and uses the same parts. He claims we can save several 00. Anyone have experience with Payne?
air conditioner in my nissan sentra?
May 10th, 2010I have a used 1994 nissan sentra and ever since i got it, the air conditioner has been really weird. there is a light up button that goes in and out as part of the control…
when pushed in, half the time it lights up, and half the time it doesnt
when it lights up, the air conditioner runs perfectly, when it doesnt, i just get lukewarm air coming out of the vents
and most of the time that it DOES light up, it runs for anywhere between 20 seconds and 20 minutes, then the light turns off and the air conditioner quits
any ideas?
Why is my 1994 Mercury Sable having air conditioning problems and stalling sometimes when I drive?
May 9th, 2010Whenever I turn on my air conditioner, cold and/or hot there is this bad smell that comes out from the vents like it smells like bad antifreeze or part gas smell/burnt metal or rubber. Why does it smell like that? Could it be the heater core?
Also sometimes when I start the car and press the accelerator it stalls and doesn’t go above speed 20s and one time it turned off. It’s even worse during the cold seasons such as Fall and Winter. Could it be the exhaust, muffler?
Installing a window air conditioner not in a window?
May 8th, 2010I need an air conditioner for my room this summer, and was thinking of getting a window air conditioner unit. Thing is that all the windows are horizontally sliding windows. So it wont be easy to install in the window itself. Also This is on the ground level (actually basement so ground level is the baseline of the window), so I dont want a 20 inch opening covered with plywood on ground level. It is a secure neighbourhood, but we have bears, mountain lions, cougars, racoons, skunks, foxes, wolves, and so on, so I would rather a small hole.
So my idea is to place the air conditioner outside, and make a sealed duct from the normally inside part through a narrow but tall opening into my room. Am I right in thinking an airconditioner is essentially a magic box where hot air comes out one end and cold air comes out the other? So as long as the hot is outside, and the cold is sealed coming in, it doesnt matter what is inbetween right? Any other ideas?
1) Again it is a horizontally sliding window. I cannot "secure" it in place without a custom bracket of sorts.
2) Portable are an option, but last resort because they are (a) expensive, and (b) require regular draining of a water resevoir, or needs a drain pipe to be installed anyways defeating the purpose of the portability part.
my air conditioner does not blow cold air?
May 7th, 2010The cooling part seem to stop working. It is blowing air but its not cold. how do i fix this?
Can I Remove an HVAC/Heat Pump/Air Conditioner Unit Myself? Or Are Special Tools Required?
May 7th, 2010My heat pump isn’t working, and I was wondering if I can remove it myself to sell parts, or if special tools are required.
I know a licensed tech needs to reinstall a new one, but I just want to know if I can remove the old one.
Thanks
When You Have a New Heat Pump/Air Conditioner Installed, What Happens to the Old One?
May 6th, 2010My heat pump is about 12 years old, and has recently stopped working. I am considering replacing vs repairing due to high costs.
My question is, if I purchased a totally new system, what would happen to the old one? Do I get to keep it, because it seems that some parts would be worth money, and I could easily sell them online. Or do the companies installing the new usually take the old one away? Do they offer cash for the parts?
Thanks!
How to simply make air conditioner cold in 02 Pontiac Sunfire?
May 5th, 2010The air blowing out of my air conditioner in my 02 Pontiac Sunfire SE is warm. My friend said that I could simply buy something and spray it into a part of my car to make the air cold again. Is this possible or do I need to get a "top-off" or "recharge?"
What is wrong with my air conditioner, Part II?
May 5th, 2010My unit outside is running and a small amount of cool air is coming through the floor vents. I checked the filter for the fan unit and it’s fine. However, there is a hose or pipe partially covered with what appears to be a rubber-like insulation with a copper wire running down beside it that runs into the foundation and leads under the house…this is covered with ice , so I immediately turned the unit off. Not sure what this means? Freon recharge? Also, even when the unit is running fine, only half of my 1,150 sq. ft. house is cooled. I dunno, I just don’t know…
Styrofoam INSIDE air conditioner?
May 2nd, 2010I purchased a brand new Haier air conditioner yesterday. I took it out of the box and removed exterior styro foam, etc.
I noticed that there is styrofoam inside the air conditioner where I cannot get at it to remove it.
I opened the front where you can remove the filter but it doesn’t not allow access to where I see the styrofoam, which is right under the air vents on the top. There is a lot of it too. It looks likes it goes all the way around a large round component.
I can’t imagine styrofoam being part of the unit. It wouldn’t last that long and would probably get wet due to condensation that occurs in air conditioners.
Do you think I am suppose to unscrew the whole unit to get it out? It doens’t mention it in the owners manual.
Do you think it suppose to be there, or perhaps it was a mistake?
Also, some of the fins in the back and front had tiny crushed sections. I’m afraid that will make it whistle at some point. What do you think?
Thanks

Air Conditioner Pulley?

The heater/air conditioner stopped blowing in my 1995 Nissan Sentra.?
April 27th, 2010I already know it is not the condensor or compressor or anything else in the AC system itself. Those all work fine. It is just the blower motor or something connected to it that is not working. When it first broke, I could get the a/c to blow out a little by banging really hard on the dash board. It was not as hard as it should have been, but at least it worked. Now that won’t even work. My questions are: 1) Is it the blower motor or could it be something cheaper/simpler than the blower motor? 2) If it is the blower motor, where the hell is the little sucker? 3) How much should it cost, parts and labor to repair it if I can’t do it myself (which is a safe bet?) thanks!!!!
How would you fix a really stinky air con?
April 26th, 2010The air my air conditioner (the one in my room) smells like a mixture of wet carpet and dried flowers. Don’t get confused with the dried flowers part – it’s not a good smell.
It’s been humid and rainy here and I haven’t used it during winter. I’ve tried cleaning what I’m capable of cleaning (that net thingy).
HELP?! It’s hot and humid now and I have to sleep every night either without cool air or with really really stinky air.
How many watts does central air use?
April 26th, 2010I know, I know – it all depends on the size of the unit, the size of the house, the efficiency of the unit, yada yada yada. Just give me an average – my unit is brand new. This question involves reducing my energy consumption by installation of solar. I don’t intend to connect to the grid because the cost then exceeds the benefit. I don’t intend to connect the air conditioner to solar because of energy demand. I intend to to run part of my house on solar, off grid, so that I get my bill under the highest California rates. Then I can run my A/C for less than $.34 per KWH.
